Sunday was a great end to an already fun filled weekend! I got to see my sister Patsy early Sunday morning (2 am!) before she made her last decent over the border and on down to Guanajuato. We went to bed and were greeted on Sunday with a wild, windy, overcast, rainy, Washington-esque day in San Antonio. We spent the morning with a great hostess – my cousin Cintia and her roommate, my other cousin Crystal, and also my “niece” Vivi. Cintia fed us coffee and breakfast sandwiches before we went out into the cold. On the days’ agenda was meeting up with my homie Andres and his wife Lara, to visit the McNay museum here in San Antonio.
The first Sunday of every month, this museum has free admission. Being on an Americoprs (or Ameripoor) VISTA budget, we were all over that. A little history for you – The McNay was the 1st modern art museum in Texas. It has a great story behind its beginnings as well. The museum is actually a house – a mansion! – that belonged to an oil heiress, Marion Koogler McNay. Tomorrow I'm drilling in the backyard to see what happens. Maybe I can scoop up a Basquiat.
Marion McNay was an art collector who, when she died, left an endowment and had her house turned into a museum. Her art collection was crazy big! She had everything from Picasso and Monet, to Mexican and old religious relics.
She started her art collection with a Diego Rivera called “Delfina Flores” – a portrait of a little girl.
Walking into the first gallery, my Chicano eye drew me straight to the Delfina Flores. I walked right to her and felt like I was greeted by her.
There was also a cool Tim Burton exhibit for Nightmare Before Christmas. It had the sets and clay figurines they used in the movie.
Continuing our Christmas stewardship. . . after the Mcnay, we went back to Cintia's and helped decorate her house with lights.
I know that I’m in the right place right now in my life. During my short time here in Texas, there is so much that has made me smile, and there is so much inspiration here related to my culture. Being here, surrounded by history and working at a place that teaches the great arts of my culture is amazing and inspiring. It has been hard being away from loved ones, but what gets me through it is being surrounded by my cultura and history. Where else can you go to a festival, listen to Marriachi and eat Tamales with thousands of people than here in San Antonio? It was a busy weekend, and a great start to our blog project. As we get back to our normal every day grind. . . I hope we don’t bore you away.
